*USERS OF COOKING GAS COMPLAIN OF HIKE IN PRICE*
The rising cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas popularly known as cooking gas has become worrisome to ordinary Nigerians in the face of rising food inflation in the country.
Some users of the product who spoke to Correspondent Patrick Edema described the situation as pouring premium motor spirit also known as petrol on an already burning flame.
Speculations that the price of a 12 point 5 kg gas cylinder is fast approaching six thousand naira in Warri and its environs compelled users of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas LPG commonly known as cooking gas to start filling their empty cylinders not minding the potential hazards associated with storing the highly inflammable product.
Just like motorists and other users now pay higher for petrol due to importation and the volatility of the naira despite having four refineries in Nigeria, consumers are now paying higher for cooking gas in a nation rated as having the 9th largest gas reserve in the world after Venezuela.
Operators in the oil and gas industry are blaming the situation on alleged excessive administrative and other sundry charges by the Department of Petroleum Resources DPR, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Authority PPPRA, among others, for the astronomical rise in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas LPG.
Also, insufficient supply of LPG to local marketers by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas NLNG Limited, a major supplier of the product in the country, has also contributed to the scarcity of the product and the resultant increase in price lately.
The numerous charges by the regulators have forced marketers of the product to hike the price at their stations, resulting in consumers having to pay more for cooking gas, which the Federal Government is projecting as the preferable cooking fuel.
A marketer who spoke to DRTV equally attributed the sharp rise in the price of LPG to the difficulty in accessing foreign exchange at the official Central Bank of Nigeria CBN rate, adding that they could not access forex at the parallel market due to its exorbitant rate.
Lately, the high price of LPG is making it difficult for many Nigerians to continue using the fuel.
He also attributed the situation to activities of cabals in the value chain who create artificial scarcity to induce price hike.
Currently a 6kg cylinder of cooking gas is selling at 2,700 naira against the 2,000 naira previously while the 5kg cylinder now sells for 2,240 against the 1,500 naira
For instance, in some gas stations in Osubi, Warri and its environs, From January to June, this year, the price of a 12.5kg cylinder was oscillating between 4,000 to 5,000 naira while the price increased from 5,000 to 5,500 from July 1, 2021.
Users of LPG said the situation has forced some low-income Nigerians, especially the local food vendors, to resort to using firewood, sawdust and coal to cook.
Attempts to reach authorities of the Nigeria Gas Company Warri on the development were unfruitful.
