*BEDC refuses to connect transformer nst Happy Mene Road Ogorode Sapele 1year after, residents protest*

Residents and business owners at Happy Mene Road Ogorode, Sapele in Sapele Local Government Area have staged a peaceful protest calling on the Delta State Government to prevail on the authorities of Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, to install the new transformer provided for them by Hon Efe Afe member  representing Sapele, Okpe and Uvwie federal Constituency at the House of Representatives.

Bladenews24 correspondent reported that the protesters alleged that authorities of BEDC were demanding over three million naira from them before connecting the transformer and restoring power to the area.


 According to the people of Happy Mene Road Ogorode Sapele their area has been in total blackout for more than one year a situation that  has crippled the economy of the area and heightened insecurity for them. 


Mr  Happy Tosan Mene who spoke for the people noted that they were happy when about a year ago, the member  representing Sapele, Okpe and Uvwie Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Efe Afe enhanced a new transformer for them in the area. 


The residents and business owners alleged that, they met with management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, who requested for five hundred thousand naira from them  to install the new transformer which was raised and given to them.


They added that, to their surprise after installing the transformer, officials of BEDC again requested for an additional three million naira to connect  the transformer to the grid.


He said their inability to raise the sum has left them in darkness in the past one year.


The protesters said they were Worried by this development, and have to stage the peaceful protest to attract the attention of the world to their plight. 

The residents called on the management of BEDC to connect the transformer the grid and restore power to the area.


They appealed  to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and relevant agencies to prevail on the management of BEDC to restore power to the area as the perpetual darkness has crippled the economy of the area and increased insecurity. 

They said  hoodlums now hide under the cover of darkness to carryout all forms of nefarious activities.


When our Newsmen contacted Authorities of BEDC on the issue they decline comment.
