The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, which is set up for the enthronement of global best practices in the provision of maritime services in Nigeria is bedevilled with many challenges that affects the Maritime Transportation Industry in Nigeria and these have to be solved and taken into consideration because this Industry plays a vital role in the Economy and growth of the Nation.


NIMASA whose areas of focus include effective Maritime Safety Administration, Maritime Labour Regulation, Marine Pollution Prevention and Control, Search and Rescue, Cabotage enforcement, Shipping Development and Ship Registration, Training and Certification of Seafarers, and Maritime Capacity Development. Using modern tools that guarantee efficiency and effectiveness, we are determined to develop indigenous capacity and eliminate all hindrances.


In order to deliver on its mandate, NIMASA needs an administrator who is experienced in that field and conversant with the terrain with a blend of security background owing to the increasing menace of sea pirates.


The name that comes to mind is Delta born, maritime guru, Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri (rtd.)


Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri rtd was enlisted into the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna State in January 1974 as a Naval Cadet and graduated in June 1975, where he obtained his Nigerian Défense

Academy (NDA) Certificate of Education (NDACE). On graduation from the NDA and was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy as a Sub-Lieutenant on the 28 December 1976.


Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri (rtd.) was the first Nigerian Navy Helicopter Pilot after being trained at Air Service Training College, Perth,

Scotland from1982 to 1985.


Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri (rtd.) is not only brilliant but has garnered the needed experience to navigate the murky waters of NIMASA, as has served as Commanding Officer of Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS) AMBE, from1994-1995, Commanding Officer of NNS UMALOKUN now NNS DELTA from 

2000 to 2001, commanded the Naval Task group in “Operation Harmony”, Bekasi from2002 to 2003, between 2003 to 2004, he was the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Naval Flag

Ship, NNS ARADU.

 He was the flag officer commanding Western Naval Command (FOC WEST) 2005. As a commodore. 


 He was the first Helicopter Pilot to 

command the Naval Air Station.

vFrom1996 to 1999, he was the Nigeria Défense Attaché to the Embassy of Nigeria in 

Malabo Equatorial Guinea.

He became the Director of Naval Operations, Naval Headquarters, Lagos from1999 to 2000 and Director of Planning at the Naval Headquarters, Abuja in 2004.


He retired from service after putting in Thirty-Five years of meritorious service in the Nigerian Navy.


Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri (rtd.) who was appointed Chief Security Adviser (CSA) to Delta State Government, 2011-2015, is one of the most decorated military officers while in service, he is a member of Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM), 

fellow Chartered Institute of Navigation (FCIS), member Royal Institute of Navigation (MRIN), fellow International Institute of Professional Security (FIIPS) omg others.


One of the things that will work in favour of Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri (rtd) is his military background, ability to fly a helicopter, excellent knowledge of the terrain and experience in maritime industry.


 Another advantage working in his favour is his fluency in speaking English, Spanish, Isoko, Ijaw, and Yoruba languages.


Rear Admiral John Onoriode Kpokpogri (rtd) is a member of the All-Progressives Congress, APC in Delta State who worked relentlessly for the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
