EWU INDIGENES PROTEST AGAINST STATE GOVT RECOGNITION OF IKOLO AS KING
People of Ewu kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Friday took to the streets in a peaceful protest against the purported imposition of a kingship candidate by the State government.
The protesters who blocked major road, disrupted business activities.in the area, appealed to the State government to honour the position of theit kingmakers.
Speaking to newsmen, the Osuvie of Ewu kingdom, Olorogun Michael Ohwofarie and Olorogun Akpoewhrien Egalaseh who are both members of the Kingmakers council known as the Ahavwa disclosed that the council had subjected the kingship candidates to the traditional process of kingmaking which is also in line with the provisions of Chieftaincy Edict of 1979 of Bendel state.
They maintained that the kingmaking process saw the emergence of Bernard Awarieta as the king and has since been crowned as the Ovie of Ewu kingdom having fulfilled all traditional rites and accepted by the Ewu people.
Both the Osuvie, Olorogun Michael Ohwofarie and Olorogun Akpoewhrien Egalaseh as well as the women leader, all appealed to the Delta State Government led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to rescind on its decision to impose someone who is not accepted by the Ewu people, but make due investigation and ensure they present the Staff of office to His Royal Majesty, Bernard Awarieta as the rightful king of Ewu kingdom.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the Ovie of Ewu kingdom, Bernard Awarieta, he disclosed that he would not do anything to undermine the state government or the people of Ewu kingdom adding that the kingdom are peace loving people.
He called on the state government, to do a proper investigation into the antecedents that led to his emergence as King and ensure the right thing is done.
He assured of their readiness to collaborate with government in finding a lasting solution to the matter.
The Ewu kingdom is one the largest in Urhobo land with seventeen communities in Ughelli South Local Government Area.
