NUPRC WADES INTO CHEVRON, HOST COMMUNITIES IMPASSE, DIRECTS ALL PARTIES TO RETURN TO STATUS QUO
The end to the impasse between Chevron Nigeria Limited, Escravos Communities and the Olu of Warri as regards the constitution of Host Communities Development Trust, Board of Trustees and implementation of PIA seems to be in sight following the intervention of the Federal Government through the Nigeria upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission; NURPC.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives of Chevron Nigeria Limited, and host communities, Chief Executive of Nigeria upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Mr Gbenga Komolafe represented by Head of Warri Regional Office, Chief Olusegun Ogunnubi said arising from a tripartite meeting with Chevron Nigeria Limited, Host Communities and Olu of Warri Palace, the commission has directed host communities and Chevron Nigeria Limited to return to status quo prior to hostilities, maintain peace and order.
Mr Komolafe an engineer, also directed Chevron Nigeria Limited to convene a meeting to be mid wifed by the commission’s Warri Regional Office to examine closely how the delineation of the host communities was conducted to ensure it was in accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021.
He also directed the composition of HCDT Board of Trustees be amiceably thrown open by the Host communities and all parties should mutually work out a formula to select the nine members.
Mr Komolafe added that the settlor and the host communities should re-examine the names and unanimously resolve on the names for the HCDT.He gave Chevron Nigeria Limited two weeks to transmit to the commission the report of the implementation of the resolved names of the HCDT.
Representatives of some of the host communities expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting.
They commended the management of NUPRC for their intervention.
