FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT : DELTA ETHNIC PEACE AND UNITY CUP LOC VISITS CHAIRMAN ISOKO TRADITIONAL RULERS COUNCIL; MAKE HIM ROYAL PATRON IN ISOKO NATION

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup on Friday paid a visit to the Chairman of the Isoko Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Omogha I, the Odio-Ologbo of Oleh Kingdom, at his palace in Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State.


Comrade Sheriff Mulade, the organizer of the Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup, explained that the visit was aimed at informing the monarch about the upcoming football tournament scheduled to also take place within the Isoko Nation. 


In his address, the organizer of the football tournament, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, informed the Chairman of the Isoko Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Omogha I, the Odio-Ologbo of Oleh Kingdom, and his subjects, that the competition, which began some years ago, was initially designed to promote peace between the Ijaw and Itsekiri communities within the Delta South Senatorial District.


Comrade Mulade, a prominent chief from the historic Gbaramatu Kingdom, further revealed that this year's edition has expanded to include the Isoko and Urhobo ethnic groups.


The expansion according to him was aimed at extending the message of peace across the region by using football as a unifying tool.


He also mentioned that the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, will serve as the special guest of honour at the tournament.


He added that the event will feature ex-international football stars and agents, who are expected to scout for new talents during the competition.


Comrade Mulade, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), disclosed that the four ethnic groups—Ijaw, Itsekiri, Isoko, and Urhobo—will compete on the field for cash prizes, with awards given to the winners and those finishing in second, third, and fourth places.


In a similar statement, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Chief Kenneth Nwaomucha, the immediate past Chairman of the Delta State Football Association (DFA), emphasized that football is a unifying sport, capable of bringing together people from diverse ethnic backgrounds.


Speaking on behalf of the Odio-Ologbo of Oleh Kingdom, the spokesman for the Oleh Kingdom Traditional Council of Chiefs, Chief Obaro Ekokobe, expressed gratitude to Comrade Sheriff Mulade for leveraging football as a platform to promote peace across Delta State. 


He assured Mulade of the kingdom's full support for the upcoming football tournament.


Comrade Sheriff Mulade, the organizer of the Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup, accompanied by the LOC Chairman, officially presented the LOC jersey to the Royal Father, appointing him as the Royal Patron for the tournament in the Isoko Nation.


The Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Cup 2024, an under-23 football competition, is set to kick off on November 16, 2024, with the opening ceremony at Ode-Itsekiri, and will culminate with the final match on December 8, 2024, at Okpe.
