FUEL SCARCITY LOOMS AS NUPENG THREATENS NATIONWIDE STRIKE
Warri-
A potential fuel scarcity crisis is brewing in Nigeria as the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to go on strike on Monday, September 8, 2025.
The strike is in response to the management of Dangote Refinery's refusal to allow its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tanker drivers to belong to a trade union.
At an emergence meeting held at PTD Warri Zonal Officer, with leadership of all units in NUPENG, IPMAN among other stakeholders unanimously resolved to down tool on Monday September 8th 2025 if nothing is been done to resolve the dispute.
Speaking to newsmen, in a protest the NUPENG Zonal Chairman, Comrade Innocent Iyere and the PTD Warri Zonal Chairman, Comrade Vincent Odjegba both said that the dispute centers on Dangote Refinery's plan to deploy thousands of CNG-powered trucks for direct fuel distribution across the country.
They noted that the Dangote refinery leadership has allegedly required drivers to forsake union membership as a condition of employment, which NUPENG claims is a breach of the right to freedom of association guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international labor laws.
NUPENG has described the refinery's position as anti-labor and has resisted it fully.
They told the media that the union has initiated several meetings with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to prevail on Aliko Dangote to rescind his stance, but to no avail.
NUPENG has warned that if the refinery fails to refrain from its decision, it will call on its members to down tools and shun loading petroleum products, effective September 8, 2025.
Others who spoke including the Delta State Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) Comrade Harry Okenini, the National Vice Chairman of PTD branch of NUPENG, Comrade Ote Marthias, the National PRO PTD, Comrade Shewa Oyemami and the PTD Warri Zonal Secretary, Comrade Happy Tosan Mene all resolved to effort the strike.
They also called on President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to intervene urgently.
The Federal Government has been urged to respond quickly to address the brewing crisis and avert any cause of hardship that Nigerians may suffer if NUPENG embarks on the planned nationwide strike.
