NUJ DBS WARRI CHAPEL TRAINS JOURNALISTS IN WARRI ON EFFECTIVE COVERAGE OF 2027 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri Chapel, on Tuesday June 23rd 2026 organized a one-day capacity-building training programme aimed at enhancing journalists' preparedness for the coverage of the 2027 General Elections.



The training, held at the Governor's Office Annex in Warri, brought together members of the union and other media practitioners from across the state.


The programme focused on promoting ethical journalism, professionalism, and responsible election reporting.



Speaking at the event, Chairman of the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel, Comrade John Glover, said the training was designed to equip journalists with the requisite knowledge and skills needed to effectively discharge their responsibilities before, during, and after the 2027 General Elections.


He noted that the programme would help deepen journalists' understanding of the Electoral Act and strengthen their capacity to provide accurate, balanced, and credible reports throughout the electoral process.



Comrade Glover commended the sponsors of the programme and expressed confidence in the resource persons, describing them as experienced professionals capable of providing valuable insights into election coverage and media ethics.


In his remarks, the General Manager of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri, Pastor Malcolm Oteri, applauded the Chapel Executive for organizing the training. 


He emphasized the importance of combating misinformation and fake news, particularly on social media platforms, during election periods.


Delivering the keynote address, the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Maton Engineering Nigeria Limited, Mr. Matthew Tonlagha, represented by a Director from the company, Mr. Martins Avuara, commended the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel for organizing the programme. 



He highlighted the company's contributions to national development, particularly in the surveillance and protection of crude oil and gas assets.


The training also featured two lectures presentation by veteran journalists, Dr. Godwin Orhedawhe and Mr. Linus Chima, both former Deputy General Managers in the News and Current Affairs Department of DBS Warri. 




The two resource persons spoke extensively on journalistic ethics, professional conduct, appropriate appearance, and the need to uphold professional standards for credible election reporting.


Goodwill messages were delivered by the Head of News and Current Affairs Department, DBS Warri, Mrs Eucheria Udo Akarue and the Head of Administration Department DBS Warri, Mr Wilson Onose who both spoke on behalf of the management team, described the programme as timely and impactful.


They implored participants to take the training seriously and strive to put into use the knowledge and teachings in their news coverage.


Participants also engaged in interactive question-and-answer sessions, allowing them to seek clarification on issues relating to election reporting and professional journalism.


The event concluded with a renewed commitment by participants to uphold the ethics of the journalism profession and contribute to credible, fair, and responsible coverage of the 2027 General Elections.
